Deeper Research

For my starting point I decided to go to the ITV website, to look at these two programmes in more depth.

On The Jeremy Kyle Shows page, Jeremy Kyle himself quotes "What this show does is to give you perspective on your own life. I often tell myself that I must never complain again about not getting enough kip, or something minor going wrong. Many of the people I meet face terror and tragedy in their lives – and they keep going. I really admire them". I love the idea of creating an exaggerated script based on the everyday scenarios my friends tell me, and asking them to play themselves in my programme. I feel this will add a realistic effect to my production and could perhaps form something humorous and relatable to the target audience (18-35 'millennials').

Emmerdale is one of Britain's best-loved and popular long-running soaps. It is set in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales, it is a realistic, down-to-earth drama with multiple narrative strands which hooks in realistic drama superbly, joining together the joys and heartbreaks of a countryside community.

Thinking more about my own project, I love the idea of creating a crime drama, something based around a missing girl. The most similar program I can think of is the series '13', which ran on BBC. Although this is not one of the commercial broadcasters chosen, ITV have similar programmes such as White Chapel and Broadchurch. Therefore I've decided to do my textual analysis on these three programmes. I hope these give me a larger insight into crime drama, and that I can explore new aspects and possible narratives in which to base my own project on.
