ITV and Channel 5
Before beggining deeper research into specific programmes, I thought it would be best to begin by looking into the two commercial broadcasters I have been given; Channel 5 and ITV. I could use a programme from any ITV channel which opens up my options on what I can produce.
Channel 5
I first looked at the programme production page ( http://www.channel5.com/programme-production/ ) on the Channel 5 website, I thought this would give me a good insight into what show the channel looks for, and if any of these options particularly appeal to me. The page is a message from the Director of Programming, Ben Frow, he states:

The page is a message from the Director of Programming, Ben Frow, he states:
"I can tell you now that we DON’T want programmes that are tricksy or derivative – or that are over formatted. And we are not crazy about ‘experts’ – I think there are probably enough out there for now.
What we DO want are programmes that are engaging, intelligent, well made and have a relevance to the viewer.
We particularly like factual shows – Specialist Factual, Documentaries and Factual Entertainment. These can be poppy, tabloid type shows or serious pieces, there’s room for all tones and textures. But they need to have a good, grabby title. We are not really in the market for Comedy or Drama at the moment but that will hopefully change moving forward. We are also hoping to commission more Features and Lifestyle further down the line but it’s hard to get those kind of shows away at the moment."
The fact that he is not after 'experts' appeals to me as it means I could create something less professional than I intended. This would help me with factors such as cost as I could use minimal resources to create something that is still fitting to the channels demands.
ITV
I took the same approach with ITV. They have a link to the page ( http://itvresponsibility.com/our-approach/ ) where they state their approach and responsibility as a commercial broadcaster.
"To continue to grow our business in a responsible and transparent way whilst harnessing the power of the nation’s most-loved and most-watched programmes to create long-term change for good.
Our responsibility strategy focuses on three priorities: People, Planet and Partnerships. Each priority highlights the risks and opportunities that are most relevant to us, and we’ve made four commitments under each one that incorporate our main assets and business operations."
People: To reflect modern society through our programmes, workforce and services, ensuring we’re relevant and accessible to all.
Planet: To increase awareness of environmental sustainability through our programmes whilst minimising the environmental impact of our operations.
Partnerships: To harness the power of our programmes and empower our people to make a difference to communities and causes.
As ITV is the UKs largest commercial broadcaster, they have a huge range of channels which all look for specific types of programmes:
ITV is the home of high quality, popular television from the biggest entertainment events, to original drama, soaps, sport, factual series and independent news, both national, and regional.
ITV2 is ITV's entertainment channel for young people, with a range of shows including original scripted comedies and panel shows, American acquisitions, and movies.
ITV3 is a home for popular classic drama series from ITV, alongside a selection of choice factual and entertainment programmes.
ITV4 is great escapism with a mixture of live sport, iconic movies, US acquired shows and cult classics.
CITV is the home for ITV's younger viewers. A mix of animated and live action series for school aged children, including home grown commissions and presentation items created by kids themselves.
ITV Encore has a schedule dedicated to drama, featuring the best of contemporary British drama series from ITV.
ITVBe is dedicated to lifestyle and entertainment programming from the UK and US, featuring real lives, and real people.
With this huge range of programmes available, ITV is currently my top choice of broadcaster, as it allows me to have more space for creativity in my project. In red is the main objectives and what genre of programmes are expected for that specific channel.
