Deeper Research: GQ Magazine
To begin my research into lifestyle magazines, I looked at the October 2018 edition of GQ (Gentleman's Quarterly), a high-end magazine created for male audience discussing the latest fashion trends and covering cultural news on the latest books, films, TV, art and comedy. The magazine costs £3.99 and consists of 260 pages which are divided into a number of sections. Although the magazine is aimed towards a male audience, a woman's section is also featured on the magazines website and occasionally the magazine itself, covering two topics; sex and relationships, and woman of the week.
GQ's Men of the Year awards are a major feature of the magazine, they state:
"Returning for its 21st year, the GQ Men Of The Year Awards 2018 will honour the men and women who shape the world's cultural landscapes in style, politics, entertainment and sport. Here's everything you need to know"
The magazine is dominated by fashion advertisements, with a number of luxury designers featuring such as Dolce and Gabbana, Gucci, Louis Vitton, Emporia Armani Ralph Lauren and more. The Men of the Year awards is associated with Hugo Boss, additionally there a number a luxury watch brands including Omega, Audemars Piguet and Cartier.
The main focus of the magazines image based front cover is a medium full shot The Prince of Wales, Charles, who won The Lifetime Achievement Award for Services to Philanthropy. In the photo, he is looking to the side, away from the camera adding a formality to the shot. Using a full shot detracts the magazine from a generic photoshoot look, focussing attention on not only the subject, but also the scenery behind. The image is coloured, but pictured in a black suit adds an element of sophistication, also framing him from the background with the contrast of green and black. The title does not especially stand out, positioned in the top left corner in gold.
In terms of TV and Film articles, a section interviewing Chadwick Boseman entitles 'International man' with the main topic discussing his latest movie Black Panther, and how the film has changed the way Hollywood understands race. The following article features Michael Wolf, an American author, essayist, journalist and a columnist and contributor to USA Today, The Hollywood Reporter, and the UK edition of GQ. This feature interests me as my own cross-media production will feature an article with my programmes writer. The article itself is about his book 'Fire and Fury', which GQ describes the book as an 'expose', which pulled back the curtain on Trump's White House in a way no other reporter even dreamed possible".
I then looked at Daniel Kayuuya's section, my
immediate attention was drawn to the bold star name in the top centre of the page, with a long-line located just below. The log-line is a small introduction to the actor, introducing his achievements and awards for his latest movie, Black Panther. His award - Actor of the year - is displayed in the centre of the page, before the interview commences. This introductory element of his section is a praise of his achievements, showing readers they should continue through his section to get to know a top actor and how he has achieved his position in this profession. The layout of the article is very simple but sleek. there article isn't exactly how my layout will, but I am looking to create a similar style in terms of minimalism, with the layout being easy to read. In terms of the main article page, the quote placed in the centre of the piece is something i would like to incorporate into my own design. With the addition to a few selected images that will be in mix with the interview itself.

Could you add any more media language to this? What do you mean by 'full' shot?
